It is not mine.
Today is Wednesday. That means gardener day.
For me, that means cleaning the yard, making sure the lawn is ready to be mowed, and picking up the last vestiges of the previous night’s backyard escapades with the kids. I forgot shoes, so I feel the cool, silent crunch of soggy grass beneath my feet.
Dawn broke a little while ago. Beams break through knotholes in the fence and gleam into our little world. The sun is at it again; that incredible, incandescent orb of God’s design. Every single morning for ages and ages, the sun has risen. Consistent. Faithful.
How amazing is that?
Observing the wonders of the sky should cause us to worship. King David weaved the following poem, maybe on a morning just like this:
“My heart is steadfast, O God;
I will sing, I will sing praises, even with my soul.
2 Awake, harp and lyre;
I will awaken the dawn!3 I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the peoples,
And I will sing praises to You among the nations.
4 For Your lovingkindness is great above the heavens,
And Your truth reaches to the skies.”— Psalms 108:1-4
Greater than all the natural beauty in the world, greater than any marvel of the cosmos, God deserves our praise. He is worthy of your adoration; of your groggy-voiced, rubbing the crust out of your eyes, cracking your neck and sighing in relief adoration. Like David, we must course correct our souls and choose to “awaken the dawn” with thanksgiving and praise for the LORD.
I remember these things as I catch the smell of damp earth and hear melodies of nearby birds. Honestly, I’m tired. My strength and energy haven’t caught up to the day yet.
But this morning belongs to Him.
It is not mine.
And how tired I am doesn’t matter. This is His day; I will choose to celebrate Him, thank Him, and give glory to King Jesus for all He has done. Isn’t He wonderful?
“We must never rest until everything inside us worships God.”
— A.W. Tozer
May that be true of all of us as we seek to authentically know Him more today than we did yesterday. Have you communed with Jesus this morning? It’s not too late to start. Reminisce about what He’s preserved you through. Thank Him for His faithfulness in your life. Praise Him because He simply Is — and deserves glory from His image-bearers for His indescribable wonder and majesty. Meet with Him now.
Awaken the dawn.

In the morning I will order my prayer to You and eagerly watch.”— Psalm 5:3
