Pulling my guitar case out of my trunk, I saw my pocket Bible in the back flipped open. There were highlighter markings popping off the page in the morning light. Interesting… but I continued to close the trunk.
*thud*
It bounced back open, which is common for me (dang rubber lining came undone again). But something nudged my eyes back to the little Bible. I wonder, I thought as my fingers groped for the edges to pull it out.
Open and highlighted was Psalm 63:
“O God, You are my God; I shall seek You earnestly;
My soul thirsts for You, my flesh yearns for You,
In a dry and weary land where there is no water.”— Psalm 63:1
Familiar. Then immediately, a sound that wasn’t. An aqueous plink, plink, plink.
I glanced over at the water pipes a few paces away. They were just under a fir tree that often shades my parked car with it’s long, silver-green boughs. Beneath the pipes was a puddle birthed from the plink, plink, plink of dripping water. What struck me in that moment was what the drops of water had produced: longer, more colorful blades of grass, a microscopic oasis, several insects buzzing, and tiny flowers popping up. An entire ecosystem.
And that life-giving power came from the water.
I lifted my eyebrows with a sigh. I love when God speaks to us through the unexpected little avenues of everyday life. Don’t you?
Humanity’s deepest telos — its goal, its fulfillment — finds its source in God Himself. He is the water we desperately need to imbibe and take into our very souls. Christ Himself said in John 4:14 that “whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.” The river of Life, flowing from the fountainhead of God’s throne, roars down the center boulevard of the New Jerusalem to sustain and invigorate it (Revelation 22:1-2). And that is Where we’re headed.
My prayer is that you see, like I did this morning, your need for God as spiritual thirst; without question, I must have more of God today. It is not optional. It’s a matter of cosmic survival. Jump in the water of Life by reaching out to God. You can do it right now.
I can’t think of a better way to suggest you do that than leaving you with a few more verses from David’s wilderness Psalm to meditate as well as a song with which you can engage the LORD today.
[Scripture]
“Thus I have seen You in the sanctuary,
To see Your power and Your glory.
Because Your lovingkindness is better than life,
My lips will praise You.
So I will bless You as long as I live;
I will lift up my hands in Your name.”— Psalm 63:2-4
